Quick verdict
- Pick Pocket if you record a lot and don’t want to pay per minute. Unlimited transcription is on the free plan, and it plugs into Claude over MCP.
- Pick Plaud if you want the longest rated recording time, a status screen, and the widest list of security certifications, and you’re fine with a yearly plan.

Minutes are the real difference
Plaud includes 300 transcription minutes a month and resets them monthly. Pro raises that to 1,200 for $99.99 a year, and Unlimited is $20 a month billed annually. Pocket has no meter. I’ve never thought about minutes once. If you record a few hours of meetings a week, Plaud’s free tier won’t cover it, so price Plaud as hardware plus a plan.
Hardware
Both clip onto the back of a phone. Plaud’s Note Pro is 0.12 inch thin, 1.06 ounces, with four mics, a vibration sensor and a small screen showing battery and recording status. Plaud rates it at 30 to 50 hours of recording. Pocket is 52 grams with two studio mics and a contact mic, rated for up to 4 days of active use. Plaud also sells the NotePin ($159) and NotePin S ($179) if you’d rather wear one, though those record in person only.
Pocket is polite. It’s about the size of a credit card, it rides on the back of my phone, and one click starts it. The phone app does the rest. Nobody across the table is staring at a phone propped up on a stack of napkins or a laptop lid between us. A small light shows when it’s recording, so nobody is surprised.
Getting your notes into AI
Pocket’s MCP server gives an AI seven tools: account info, folder lists, hybrid search across recordings, action item search, and action item updates on any plan, plus full transcripts with audio links and cross meeting questions on Pro. I run it every day. On the free plan, MCP is mostly search. Plaud has moved into agent features: Plaud Agent drafts emails, reports and slides, and connectors for Google Calendar, Slack, Notion and Linear are in preview. I couldn’t find an MCP server on Plaud’s public pages.
Privacy and compliance
Plaud lists ISO 27001, ISO 27701, SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR and EN 18031, and says data isn’t used for training unless you opt in. Pocket lists SOC 2 Type 1, HIPAA and GDPR on its trust page, offers HIPAA mode and a BAA on Enterprise, encrypts on device, in transit and at rest, and says recordings aren’t used for training. Plaud’s certification list is longer today.
A note on consent
Recording laws vary. Some states, including California and Washington, require everyone in the conversation to consent. Whatever you use, tell people you’re recording.
One more thing
Plaud’s Note Pro is 0.12 inch thin, roughly four credit cards stacked.
