Short answer: yes, Pocket records phone calls, and it does it without speakerphone. You slide the switch up, keep Pocket on the back of your phone, and press the button. Here is how it works and what to watch for. Facts come from [Pocket's docs](https://docs.heypocketai.com/) as of October 28, 2026.

## How it works

Pocket has three mics: two studio mics for the room, and one contact mic. The contact mic is the trick. In Call mode it listens through the back of the phone, so it picks up your call without putting it on speaker.

That is also why Pocket has to be attached to the phone. It rides on the back by MagSafe. For Android phones and iPhones without MagSafe, it ships with a magnetic ring you stick on the phone or case.

## Record a call, step by step

1. Attach Pocket to the back of your phone.
2. Slide the switch **up** to Call mode.
3. Press the side button once. The light goes solid amber.
4. Make or take the call as normal. No speakerphone.
5. When you hang up, press the button once to stop.
6. Slide the switch back **down** to Conversation mode.

The recording syncs to the Pocket app and gets a transcript, a summary and action items, the same as an in person recording.

## Do not skip step 6

The contact mic is very sensitive. If you leave the slider up and set the phone on a desk, it records the desk: taps, bumps and keyboard noise. Slide down when the call is over.

## Tips

- **Pause instead of stopping.** If you go on hold, double-press to pause (the light goes white) and press again to resume. Needs firmware 1.8 or later.
- **It records offline.** Pocket stores audio on the device and syncs when it is back with your phone and you open the Pocket app.
- **Check the slider before you dial.** It is the one step that is easy to forget. Up for calls, down for the room.

## Calls on your laptop

Teams, Zoom and Google Meet calls on a computer are a different path. The Pocket desktop app, in beta, records your mic plus the call audio on macOS and Windows 10 and later, without adding a bot to the meeting. Most of my work meetings are on a laptop, so that is where most of mine go. Details are in [the Pocket desktop app](/pocket-desktop-app/) and [Pocket as a meeting recorder](/pocket-meeting-recorder/).

## A note on consent

Recording laws vary. Some states, including California and Washington, require everyone on the call to consent. Whatever you use, tell people you are recording.
