I carry a Pocket every day. It sits on the back of my phone, and most of my calls, meetings and half formed ideas go through it. I've written about [what Pocket is](/pocket-ai-recorder/) and [how to set it up and use it](/how-to-use-pocket-ai-recorder/). The question I get next is always the same: what else is out there, and is any of it better?

So here's the field as of October 2026. Hardware recorders, wearables, and the software only note takers, compared on what actually matters: what you pay up front, what you pay every month, how long the battery lasts, how many minutes you get, where your audio goes, and whether you can pipe your notes into Claude or another AI over MCP.

## The short version

- **Want no minute caps without a subscription?** Pocket is the only device here with unlimited transcription on the free plan.
- **Want the most polished hardware and don't mind a plan?** Plaud Note Pro.
- **Want something cheap you wear all week?** Bee Frontier from Amazon.
- **Want open source and an MCP server you can run yourself?** Omi.
- **Want fully offline transcription?** iFlytek's Smart Recorder transcribes on the device.
- **Only care about computer meetings?** Skip hardware. Granola captures without a bot; Otter and Fireflies usually join the call as a bot.
- **Thinking about Limitless?** You can't buy one anymore.

## 1. Pocket

This is the one I use, so I'll be direct about why.

<figure class="product-photo">
  <img src="/images/products/pocket-magsafe.webp" alt="Pocket AI recorder, a thin metal card, attached to the back of a white iPhone held in a hand" width="800" height="800" loading="lazy" decoding="async">
  <figcaption>Image: Pocket</figcaption>
</figure>

Pocket is polite. It's about the size of a credit card, one click starts it, and the phone app does the rest. In person, that's far less in the way than a phone or a laptop sitting on the table between you and the other person. A light shows when it's recording.

Pocket is a thin, 52 gram slab that snaps onto the back of my phone with MagSafe. One press of the side button starts recording. It has two studio mics for the room and a contact mic that picks up phone calls through the phone body, so I never have to put a call on speaker. It stores 64GB onboard and records with no phone connection or internet, then syncs when I open the app.

The thing that sold me is the plan. Transcription is unlimited on the free tier. No meter, no monthly reset, no top up packs. Pro at $19.99 a month (or $239.88 a year) adds the highest accuracy model, automatic speaker names, unlimited Ask Pocket chats, forever history, and sync to Notion, Google Drive, Linear and the like.

The other thing: Pocket exposes my recordings over MCP. My AI assistant searches my meetings and pulls action items straight out of Pocket without me exporting anything. Once you have that, a recorder that only gives you a PDF summary feels like a fax machine.

**Pros**
- Unlimited transcription with no subscription
- Contact mic records both sides of phone calls without speakerphone
- Up to 4 days of active use per charge, 1.5 hour recharge
- Works fully offline, 120+ languages
- MCP access for Claude and other AI tools

**Cons**
- Best transcription accuracy and speaker names sit behind Pro
- Free summaries are kept for 30 days
- Phone attachment, so it isn't something you wear

### What Pocket's MCP server actually exposes

I run Pocket's MCP server through my assistant every day, so here is exactly what it gives an AI to work with. Seven tools:

- **get_account_info:** your email, name, plan (free or Pro) and org. Works on every plan.
- **list_pocket_folders:** your folders and spaces, with a recording count for each.
- **search_pocket_conversations:** hybrid vector and keyword search across your recordings. It returns up to 8 section level hits, each with a timestamp and summary. Leave the query out and it pages through your recent full transcripts, newest first. You can filter by date range, folder and tag. Recordings that haven't been transcribed yet come back marked transcriptAvailable false.
- **get_pocket_conversation:** the full transcript, AI notes and a signed audio URL for one recording. Pro only.
- **query_pocket_meetings:** ask a plain question across all your meetings and get one combined answer, plus the ids of the recordings it came from. Pro only.
- **search_pocket_actionitems:** the one tap actions Pocket generates (send a message, draft an email, create a reminder), filterable by status, priority and due date.
- **update_pocket_actionitem:** mark an action done, change its priority, reschedule it or relabel it. This is the only tool that writes anything.

The heavy tools are Pro gated. On the free plan, MCP is mostly search: you can find the right moment in a recording, but pulling the whole transcript or asking questions across every meeting needs Pro. There's also one older tool, search_pocket_conversations_timerange, that is deprecated. Date filters on the main search tool replace it.

**Privacy and compliance:** Pocket lists SOC 2 Type 1, HIPAA and GDPR on its trust page. Recordings are encrypted on the device, in transit and at rest, processed on US based infrastructure, and not sold or used to train models. You can keep recordings on device or sync them. The Enterprise plan includes HIPAA mode and BAA support.

## 2. Plaud Note Pro, Note and NotePin

Plaud is the best known name in this category. The lineup is the Note Pro ($189), the Note ($159), the NotePin ($159) and the NotePin S ($179).

<div class="product-photo-row">
<figure class="product-photo">
  <img src="/images/products/plaud-note-black.webp" alt="Black Plaud Note card recorder, front view, with the Plaud logo and two control buttons" width="800" height="800" loading="lazy" decoding="async">

<figure class="product-photo">
  <img src="/images/products/plaud-notepin-black.webp" alt="Black Plaud NotePin wearable recorder, front view, oval pin with a small logo" width="800" height="800" loading="lazy" decoding="async">
  <figcaption>Image: Plaud</figcaption>
</figure>
</div>

The Note Pro is a 0.12 inch, 1.06 ounce card with four MEMS mics plus a vibration sensor, a small status display, and 64GB of storage. Plaud rates it at 30 hours of recording in Enhance mode or 50 in Endurance mode, with pickup out to about 16 feet. It switches between in person and phone call modes on its own. The NotePin and NotePin S are the wearable versions, rated for up to 20 hours of recording, and they record in person only, not phone calls. Plaud rates the Note at up to 30 hours.

The catch is minutes. Every device includes 300 transcription minutes a month. Pro is $99.99 a year for 1,200 minutes. Unlimited is $20 a month billed annually ($29.99 monthly). Minutes reset monthly and don't roll over. If you record a full workday of meetings, you'll be on the Unlimited plan.

On the software side Plaud has been moving fast: Plaud Agent turns conversations into emails, reports and slides, and connectors for Google Calendar, Slack, Notion and Linear are in preview.

**Pros**
- Premium, very thin hardware with long recording time
- Big certification list: ISO 27001, ISO 27701, SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR
- Strong summary templates and agent features

**Cons**
- 300 free minutes a month goes quickly
- Real cost is hardware plus a yearly plan
- No MCP server listed on Plaud's public pages

## 3. Bee Frontier and Bee Eclipse (Amazon)

<figure class="product-photo product-photo--wide">
  <img src="/images/products/bee-frontier-bands.webp" alt="Three Bee Frontier wristbands in lilac, sage and black, each with a circular button" width="960" height="540" loading="lazy" decoding="async">
  <figcaption>Image: Amazon</figcaption>
</figure>

Amazon bought Bee in 2025 and announced two new devices on October 15, 2026. Bee Frontier is a $74.99 wristband that also clips onto clothing, with dual mics, IP67 water resistance and up to seven days of battery. Bee Eclipse is a credit card sized phone attachment from $99.99, rated for more than 21 days on a charge and built for phone calls. Eclipse is listed as coming soon, with no date announced.

Bee is built as an always on personal memory rather than a meeting recorder. Amazon says audio is processed in real time and then deleted, never stored to disk, and that conversations are encrypted with keys only you control.

Free gets you summaries and 14 days of memory. Bee Pro is $11.99 a month or $99.99 a year and adds unlimited memory, a desktop app, suggested to dos, and integrations with Gmail, Google Calendar, Outlook, Photos, Health, Alexa and Amazon shopping. Shopping suggestions from your conversations are opt in.

**Pros**
- Cheapest hardware here
- Week long battery on Frontier, three weeks on Eclipse
- No stored audio, by design

**Cons**
- 14 day memory on the free plan
- No raw audio to go back to
- Integrations center on Amazon and Alexa; no MCP server listed

## 4. Omi

<figure class="product-photo">
  <img src="/images/products/omi-pendant.webp" alt="Omi pendant on a black cord, round translucent case with a blue status light" width="800" height="800" loading="lazy" decoding="async">
  <figcaption>Image: Omi</figcaption>
</figure>

Omi is the open source option. The pendant is $129 right now ($179 list), about 2.5 by 1.5 cm, with two mics, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and a 10 to 14 hour battery. It records offline and syncs later.

The hardware designs, firmware, app and backend are all MIT licensed on GitHub, and you can self host the backend. Omi also ships an MCP server that lets Claude Desktop read, search and edit your memories and conversations with an API key from the app. If you're a builder, this is the most hackable device in the group.

The free plan includes unlimited on phone transcription plus 300 cloud minutes a month. Unlimited is $269 a year.

**Pros**
- Fully open source, self hostable
- First party MCP server
- SOC 2 and HIPAA per Omi

**Cons**
- Shortest battery of the hardware options
- Pendant form factor, no phone call contact mic listed
- Cloud minutes are capped on free

## 5. Limitless Pendant (discontinued for new buyers)

Limitless used to be on every list like this one. Meta acquired it on December 5, 2025, and stopped selling the Pendant the same day. Existing owners got the Unlimited plan free and support through 2026. The Rewind desktop app was shut down, and service was pulled in the EU, UK, Brazil, China, Israel, South Korea and Turkey. If you see a Pendant on a resale site, know that support has an end date.

## 6. Soundcore Work (Anker)

<figure class="product-photo product-photo--wide">
  <img src="/images/products/soundcore-work-clip.webp" alt="Soundcore Work coin sized recorder held between two fingers, black clip and orange status light" width="960" height="597" loading="lazy" decoding="async">
  <figcaption>Image: Soundcore</figcaption>
</figure>

Anker's entry is a coin sized wearable at 0.35 ounces that clips to a collar, hangs on a necklace or attaches to a phone. It's $159 for the 8 GB model on Anker's site. Anker rates it at 8 hours of recording, or 32 with the charging case, and 10 minutes of charging gives about 2 hours. It includes 300 transcription minutes a month. Pro is $15.99 a month or $99.99 a year for 1,200 minutes, and Unlimited is $239.99 a year.

Privacy is a focus: audio and transcripts are AES-256 encrypted and stored locally by default, cloud audio is deleted after transcription when cloud storage is off, and the app is SOC 2 Type I certified. It's also MFi certified for iPhone and supports 150+ languages.

## 7. iFlytek Smart Recorder

<figure class="product-photo">
  <img src="/images/products/iflytek-recorder-pair.webp" alt="iFLYTEK Smart Recorder handheld device, two angles, showing the touchscreen and control wheel" width="800" height="800" loading="lazy" decoding="async">
  <figcaption>Image: iFLYTEK</figcaption>
</figure>

iFlytek takes the old school route: a handheld recorder that transcribes offline, on the device, in English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Russian. It has a 2+4 mic array with pickup to about 10 meters, 32GB of storage, and up to 7 hours of continuous recording. The official store lists it at $127.99 on sale from $249. AI summaries use cloud models when you're online. If you need a recorder that never has to touch a network, this is the one to look at.

## 8. Otter

Otter is software only. It joins your Zoom, Google Meet and Teams calls and writes a live transcript with speaker labels. The free plan gives you 300 minutes a month with a 30 minute cap per conversation. Pro is $16.99 a month, or $8.49 a month billed annually. Otter has an official MCP server for Claude, included on the free plan, and lists SOC 2 Type II with HIPAA as an Enterprise add-on. Good for virtual meetings, not built for in person or phone calls, and the bot shows up as a participant in your meeting.

## 9. Fireflies

Fireflies is also software only, built around conversation analytics: talk time, topics and sentiment across your meetings. The free plan includes 3 meeting transcriptions, unlimited if you turn on Auto-join, with 400 minutes of storage per seat and up to 2 hours per meeting. Pro is $10 a month billed annually or $18 monthly. Fireflies runs an official MCP server, lists SOC 2 Type II, and offers HIPAA with a BAA on Enterprise with Private Storage. Like Otter, it sends a bot into your calls, and there is a mobile app for in person recording.

## 10. Granola

Granola is a meeting notes app for Mac, Windows, iOS, Android and Apple Watch that captures audio from your device, so no bot joins the call. Basic is free with no daily transcription limit and 30 days of history. Business is $14 per user a month. Its official MCP server works on every plan; on Basic it reaches your personal notes from the last 30 days. Granola lists SOC 2 Type II, deletes audio after transcription, and offers HIPAA workspaces on Enterprise.

## 11. Your phone

Most phones ship with a recorder app. Drop the file into your AI of choice for a summary. It's free, and it's fine for a meeting a week. It falls apart when you want it hands free, on phone calls, and searchable a month later.

## How to choose

Ask four questions.

1. **Where do your conversations happen?** In person and on the phone, get hardware with a contact mic or vibration sensor (Pocket, Plaud Note, Bee Eclipse). Mostly video calls, software is enough.
2. **How many hours do you record?** Do the math on minutes. Ten hours of meetings a week is about 2,600 minutes a month, which blows through a 300 or 1,200 minute plan.
3. **Do you want a meeting recorder or a life recorder?** Pocket and Plaud are press to record. Bee, Omi and Limitless were designed to listen all day.
4. **Where should your notes end up?** If you want Claude or another AI to work with your conversations, check for MCP first. Pocket, Omi, Otter, Fireflies and Granola have it today.

For me the answer is still Pocket: unlimited minutes, phone calls without speakerphone, and an MCP feed into the assistant that runs my day. At 52 grams, it weighs about the same as ten nickels.

## A note on consent

Recording laws vary. Some states, including California and Washington, require everyone in the conversation to consent. Whatever you use, tell people you're recording.
