Heads up: some links here are affiliate links. If you buy through them I may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. It doesn't change what I recommend.

I carry a <a href="https://heypocket.com/12250024" rel="sponsored noopener">Pocket</a> every day. Out of the box it is fine. With about fifteen minutes in the settings it gets a lot better. This is the list I would hand a friend.

One rule for this page: every setting and menu path here comes from Pocket's own docs, and the page for each one is in [Sources](#sources). If Pocket's docs do not cover something, I say so instead of guessing. Menus move between app versions, so if a path does not match your app, the linked doc is the place to check.

New to Pocket? Start with [how to set it up and make your first recording](/how-to-use-pocket-ai-recorder/), then come back. For the full review, see [Pocket AI recorder: how it works, how I use it](/pocket-ai-recorder/).

## The short version

If you only change five things:

1. **Summary theme to Meeting** if most of your recordings are meetings.
2. **Meeting Detection on, Auto Record off** in the desktop app.
3. **Voice Print trained** in a quiet room.
4. **Word Dictionary** filled with the names Pocket keeps getting wrong.
5. **Wi-Fi upload** on your home network, with Auto Sync on.

The rest of this page is the why and the where.

## Recording

### The slider and the side button

The slider is the one setting on the hardware.

- **Down is Conversation mode** for people in the room.
- **Up is Call mode** for phone calls. It uses the contact mic, so you do not need speakerphone. Keep Pocket attached to the back of your phone during the call.

After a call, stop the recording and slide back down. Pocket's docs say the Call mode contact mic is sensitive enough to pick up surface noise if you leave it on. This is the mistake I see most.

The side button:

- **Hold 5 seconds** to turn Pocket on or off.
- **One press** starts or stops a recording.
- **Double-press while recording** pauses. A single or double press resumes. The recording stays one file until you stop.

Pause needs firmware 1.8 or later. If you do not see pause controls, update firmware from the app first.

### The status light

Learn these four and you never have to open the app to know what Pocket is doing:

- **Solid amber:** recording.
- **Solid white:** paused.
- **Solid blue:** paired and ready.
- **Blinking purple:** firmware update in progress. Leave it alone until it restarts.

### Laptop meetings: Meeting Detection and Auto Record

For Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet, use the Pocket desktop app on macOS or Windows. It records your mic and the call audio. No bot joins the meeting. It does not capture video, chat, or shared screens.

In the desktop app, go to **Settings, then General, then Recording**:

- **Meeting Detection:** leave it on. Pocket tells you when a supported call starts or ends.
- **Auto Record:** optional. On means Pocket starts recording by itself once it detects a meeting. Off means it asks first.

I run detection on and Auto Record off. I want to choose what gets recorded, and the prompt is a natural moment to tell the room.

Three habits from Pocket's own tips that are worth keeping:

- Keep the desktop app running, or detection and Auto Record will not fire.
- Wear headphones when you can, so your mic does not pick up the speakers.
- Make a short test recording after you change mics, headphones, or speakers. If system audio capture is not available, Pocket keeps recording your mic instead of failing, so check the level before an important call.

The full meeting workflow is on [Pocket as a meeting recorder](/pocket-meeting-recorder/).

## Transcription language

During setup, Pocket asks for the language you speak most often. It uses that for **transcriptions and AI summaries**. You can change it any time in **Settings, then Summary Language**.

Set it to the language most of your recordings are in. If you switch languages for a stretch, change it first, then record.

### Word Dictionary

This is the most underrated setting in the app. It has two parts:

- **Custom Words** for names, brands, and jargon Pocket should keep as written. Customer names, product names, acronyms.
- **Word Corrections** for a word Pocket keeps mishearing. You enter the misheard word and the word you want instead.

Two limits from Pocket's docs: dictionary words and corrections apply to recordings **under 1 hour**, and changes apply to **future** recordings, not ones already transcribed.

## Summaries and templates

### Pick a summary theme

The summary theme is the lens Pocket uses to write up a recording. Pocket's Day 1 guide lists:

- **Meeting** for team stuff.
- **Discovery Call** for sales or partners.
- **Interview** for hiring or research.
- **Journaling** for thinking out loud.
- **Auto Detect** if you are not sure.

Pocket's template docs also mention **Casual Talk** as a preset for informal chats, and the theme screen shows presets like Meeting Summary and Call Summary. You can change the theme later and Pocket will re-summarize.

Where it lives: Pocket's template guide says **Settings, then Summary, then Summary theme**. The Day 1 guide calls it your summary style in the profile section. Same setting, two descriptions.

My pick: Meeting if most of your recordings are meetings. Auto Detect is fine for your first week while you figure out what you actually record.

### Say the labels out loud

This costs nothing and works with any theme. Pocket's Day 1 guide suggests saying plain labels during the conversation:

- "Decision: ship the bug fix only."
- "Action item: Jamie sends the deck by Friday 5pm."
- "Risk: login flow breaks on Android."

Pocket picks those up and puts them in the summary, the mind map, and the action list.

### Build a custom template (Pro)

Custom templates need **Pocket Pro**. Go to **Settings, then Summary, then Summary theme**, then tap **Create new template**. A template has three parts:

- A **name** that says when to use it.
- **Global instructions** for the purpose, audience, tone, and priorities.
- **Sections**, each with a title and its own instructions. Drag to reorder.

Pocket uses your section titles as headings, in the order you set. Pocket is clear that templates guide the AI. They are not rigid forms, and the summary still depends on what was actually said.

Pocket's own advice, which matches what works:

- Three to six focused sections.
- Specific titles like Customer Pain Points or Risks and Dependencies, not Notes or Key Points.
- For each section, say what to extract, how to format it, and what to write when the detail was not mentioned. "Not stated" is a good default.
- Add an accuracy rule to the global instructions, like "Use only details supported by the conversation. Do not infer missing facts."

Here is a customer call template I would start from:

- **Name:** Customer Call Brief
- **Global instructions:** Concise brief for the account team. Prioritize problems, business impact, objections, commitments, and deadlines. Use only details supported by the conversation. Do not infer missing facts.
- **Who was there:** Names and roles as stated. Write Not stated if a role was not mentioned.
- **Their problem:** Bullets, in their words where possible.
- **Commitments:** Who promised what, by when.
- **Open questions:** Anything left unanswered.
- **Purple Cow:** The one detail from the call nobody would expect, in a single line. A pet on camera, a strange tool in their stack, a story worth retelling. If nothing stood out, write Not stated.

That last section is my favorite. It is the line that makes you remember the call a month later, and it is the opener for the follow-up email.

### Action items and the Checklist

Pocket can automatically add tasks from your summaries to the **Checklist** tab, and you can toggle that in settings. Every task links back to its recording. Use **labels** to keep work and personal tasks apart.

I leave auto-add on and treat the list as a checklist to verify, not the record. Speaker attribution can slip when people talk over each other.

## Speakers

### Voice Print

Train it. It takes under a minute. Go to the **Profile** tab, then **Voice Print**, and read the sample lines.

After that, your lines are tagged as you instead of Speaker 1, decisions and action items are attributed better, and Ask Pocket can find things you said. Pocket recommends training in a quiet room on the device you record with most. If recognition gets worse, for example after a mic change, **Regenerate Voice Print**.

### Speaker Management

Name people once and Pocket recognizes them across your other recordings. Open a transcript, tap an untagged speaker label, and enter a name.

If the same person shows up twice, go to **Profile, then Speaker Management**, select the duplicates, and tap **Merge**. Deleting a speaker profile only removes the name. It does not delete recordings.

One limit: automatic speaker detection is not available for recordings **three hours or longer**.

## Integrations

### Calendar

Pocket's Calendar Hub supports **Google Calendar** and the **iPhone calendar**. It asks for calendar permission during onboarding. You can manage accounts later in the **Settings** tab, and the Day 1 guide also points to **Calendar tab, then Add Calendar**.

Once connected, tap **Add to Calendar** on an action to put it on a day. The Meetings Hub shows your schedule with recordings linked next to their events.

### Your AI assistant over MCP

This is why I picked Pocket. Its remote MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients search your recordings, summaries, and action items. Setup is on [connect Pocket AI to Claude](/connect-pocket-ai-to-claude/) and the details are on [the Pocket MCP server](/pocket-mcp-server/). How I actually use it is on [Pocket and your AI agent](/pocket-ai-agent/).

### Obsidian

If you keep notes in a vault, see [Pocket and Obsidian](/pocket-obsidian/).

### Tags

Tag recordings by project, like #work or a client name, and stay consistent. Ask Pocket can filter by tag, so a question like "show me all decisions from meetings tagged #apollo" works.

## Sync and Wi-Fi upload

Pocket has three ways to sync:

- **Bluetooth** is the default. Fine for short memos and daily use.
- **Sync Faster** uses Pocket's own Wi-Fi for big batches. Pocket says it can be up to 20x faster than Bluetooth.
- **Pocket Web Sync** over USB-C for bulk transfers to your computer. Turn on USB mode in the app. Use a data cable. Some USB-C cables only charge.

### Wi-Fi upload

This is the one I would turn on today. Pocket sends a new recording to your account over a saved Wi-Fi network, without your phone nearby. Go to **Settings, then Device, then Wi-Fi upload**, pick your network, and enter the password.

What it needs, per Pocket's docs:

- A **2.4 GHz** network. Pocket cannot see 5 GHz.
- **WPA2 or WPA Personal** security. WPA3 only is not supported yet. WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode works.
- **Pocket firmware 1.8.5 or later** and **Wi-Fi firmware V10 or later**.
- **Auto Sync on** if you want an upload after every recording.

It can remember **up to 8 networks**. Add home, office, and your phone hotspot. On iPhone 12 and later, turn on **Maximize Compatibility** in Personal Hotspot so it runs on 2.4 GHz.

What does not work: office networks that need a username, hotel and airport sign-in pages, hidden networks, and IPv6 only networks. A wrong password shows up as "not found," so check both.

If Pocket cannot reach a saved network, the recording syncs over Bluetooth next time. Nothing is lost.

One privacy note: the Wi-Fi password is stored on Pocket only. If you sign out of the app, Pocket keeps uploading to the account it was set up with. To stop that, forget your saved networks before you sign out.

## Privacy

The settings that matter here:

- **Recording consent.** Laws and company policies vary. Tell people and get consent where required. Meeting Detection with Auto Record off gives you a natural pause to do that.
- **Pause.** Double-press the side button to skip a sensitive moment without ending the recording. White light means you are not capturing.
- **Voice Print.** Pocket says it is encrypted and used only for speaker identification in your own account.
- **Recycle Bin.** Deleted recordings stay for **30 days**, then are removed permanently. You can restore in that window or empty the bin yourself.
- **Hide.** Long-press on the home screen for multi-select. Hide removes recordings from the main list without deleting them.
- **Wi-Fi upload and sign out.** Forget saved networks first, as above.

Recordings upload to Pocket's cloud for transcription and summaries. For anything beyond that, read Pocket's privacy policy. I am not going to paraphrase a legal document here.

## Battery

Pocket's docs do not publish a battery life number on the pages I used, so I am not going to give you one. What they do cover:

- **Check it:** double-press the side button when you are not recording. Green is full, amber is about half, red is low. The app home screen shows battery too.
- **Charging:** USB-C. Blinking green is charging, solid green is full.
- **Wi-Fi upload costs battery.** Pocket says uploading uses more than standing by, and a 5 hour recording takes several minutes to upload. Charge regularly if you record long meetings.
- **Pocket does not hunt forever.** If it cannot find a saved network within about 45 seconds, it hands the recording to the app and waits before searching again, so it does not drain the battery.
- **Dead looking Pocket:** charge for 10 minutes, then hold the side button 5 seconds.
- **Android:** if sync is flaky, Pocket's troubleshooting guide says to turn off battery optimization for the Pocket app.

## What I leave alone

- **Auto Record.** Off. I choose.
- **Call mode after a call.** Never left on.
- **The action list as the system of record.** It is a checklist I verify.
- **Long recordings and the dictionary.** If a meeting will run over an hour and names matter, I split it. Dictionary words only apply under an hour.
