Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026. It still does the same thing: you upload your course material and it answers questions from those sources only. That makes it one of the best free study tools. More on the [study tools hub](/ai-life/work-study/study-tools/).

## Free plan limits

## The workflow

1. **One notebook per course.** Upload the syllabus, slides, readings and your lecture transcripts.
2. **Ask for a study guide.** Have it list the main topics and cite the source for each.
3. **Ask questions.** Use chat to explain what you don't get. Click the citations to check.
4. **Listen.** Generate an Audio Overview of a unit for the commute.
5. **Test yourself.** Make flashcards and a quiz before each exam.

## Tips

- Lecture recordings make it much better. A recorder with unlimited transcription helps; see [best AI voice recorder for students](/ai-life/gadgets/ai-recorders/best-ai-voice-recorder-students-vs-professionals/).
- Check the citations. It can still get things wrong.
- Follow your school's AI policy.
