Mike’s take: I use Greenlight all day every day for my kid. 5/5 hands down. More in my owner review .
Getting started
- Sign up as the parent, pick a plan, and add your kid.
- Fund the parent wallet, then set up allowance and chores.
- Set spending controls before the card arrives.

Chores and allowance
Greenlight lets you assign chores, automate allowance, add rewards and send reminders, so the weekly money routine runs itself (Greenlight ).
Parental controls worth setting first
Greenlight lists the controls it gives parents: real-time spending notifications, the ability to block spending categories, Mastercard Zero Liability fraud protection, and FDIC insurance on funds in each card account up to the stated limit. It also says it does not sell your data to third parties and does not track your family’s location without permission (Greenlight security ). Turn on notifications and category blocks before the card arrives, not after the first surprise purchase.
Family Hub vs the Greenlight app
Family Hub is the shared screen at home; the phone app is the parent control center. Per Greenlight, some things only happen in the app: approving or sending back a completed chore, managing allowances, the wallet, investing accounts and debit card locks, safety features like place alerts and SOS, and changing your plan. Kids can use the Hub on their own to check and complete chores, see the calendar and visit the Reward Shop, while creating or changing things needs the parent PIN (Greenlight Family Hub FAQ ).
A few practical notes from the same FAQ: Family Hub comes in a portable 10.1-inch model and a plug-in 15.6-inch model, has no camera, is US only, and needs Wi-Fi (2.4 or 5 GHz, no captive portals) for most features. Calendars from Google, Outlook, iCloud, Cozi and TeamSnap sync in; chores and lists stay inside Greenlight.
How the AI works
- Where it lives: Greenlight’s AI assistant is part of Greenlight Family Hub, not the core card app. You talk to it with “Hey Greenlight” (Greenlight help ).
- What it does: checks and creates chores, runs schedules, lists and timers, and gives daily summaries. It can check debit card balances, but not wallet balances (Greenlight help ).
- Which plan: the voice assistant comes with the Family Hub Plus plan (Greenlight Family Hub FAQ ).
- Needs the internet: the AI text and voice assistant does not work offline, so requests go over your Wi-Fi to Greenlight’s service. Offline, the Hub still shows calendars (read-only), synced photos, lists and chores (Greenlight Family Hub FAQ ).
- Which model: Greenlight has not published which AI model powers the assistant.
- What it can’t do: the Hub can’t approve chores or manage money; those stay in the parent app.
