Greenlight is a debit card and money app for kids, managed by a parent. Kids get their own card and app to spend, save and earn. Parents get the controls: where the card works, how much can be spent, and an alert every time it is used. I use it all day, every day, for my kid.

## Why I rate it a 5

My verdict is short: I use it all day, every day, and it is 5/5 hands down. That daily use is the point. Greenlight is not an app you open once a month to check a balance. It is built to be the everyday channel for a kid's money, with parent alerts as purchases happen and controls you set once. A money app that gets used every day is the strongest endorsement I can give one.

## What it does well

- **Real-time alerts.** Every purchase pings the parent app, per Greenlight.
- **Controls you can set by store.** Block categories or specific stores and set spending limits, per Greenlight's parental controls page.
- **Chores and allowance on autopilot.** Set them once and the money moves on schedule.
- **Savings goals.** Kids can set aside money for something specific and watch it grow.
- **Card on and off.** If the card goes missing, switch it off from your phone.

## What to know before you sign up

- **It is a monthly subscription.** Greenlight has several tiers. Features like investing and extra safety tools sit on the higher ones. Compare the tiers on Greenlight's plans page against what you will use.
- **Money lives in Greenlight.** Funds sit with Greenlight's partner bank, insured up to the limit. Load only what you plan to use.
- **It is a teaching tool, not a bank account for adults.** The value is in the habits it builds.
- **Kids need a phone for the full experience.** The card works without one, but the kid app is where saving and learning happen.

## Who should get it

Get it if you want your kid to handle real money with guardrails, and you want to see every purchase without hovering. It is a strong fit for families who already pay an allowance or chores in cash and want that to be automatic. Skip it if your kid is too young to use a card, or if a free teen checking account from your own bank covers what you need. Compare those options before you commit to a subscription.

## Safety and privacy

Greenlight says funds are FDIC-insured up to the limit through Community Federal Savings Bank, and the parent controls cover where and how much a card can spend. As with any app that holds a child's information, read Greenlight's privacy policy, turn on two-factor authentication for the parent account, and talk with your kid about not sharing card details.

## Is Greenlight on sale for Black Friday?

Greenlight sometimes runs sign-up offers. I do not list them here because they change. Check Greenlight's site for current offers, and check today's price for the tier you want.

## Alternatives

- **A teen checking account from your bank.** Often free, with fewer teaching tools.
- **Other kids debit apps.** Compare parent controls, fees and how many kids a plan covers.
