Mike’s take: I use the MEATER Pro XL and rate it 4/5. In my words: “Mostly good, the WiFi can be spotty, and it’s still a daily tool for me.” More in my owner review .

Getting started

  1. Charge the probes in the block, install the MEATER app and sign in with a MEATER account. The account matters later: Alexa and Home Assistant both use it.
  2. Set up a cook in the app before you start: pick the protein and the target doneness. Alexa only works once a cook is set up in the app (MEATER Support ).
  3. Insert the probe into the thickest part of the meat. MEATER says a thin section gives a shorter, wrong estimate (MEATER Support ).
  4. Pull the meat when the app says to, even if it reads under target. The estimator plans for carryover while it rests (MEATER Support ).

How the AI works

MEATER calls it an estimator algorithm, not a chatbot, and that is the right way to think about it.

  • Inputs: the probe’s internal and ambient temperature plus the protein you picked (MEATER Support ).
  • Output: when to pull the meat, including the temperature rise during the rest (MEATER Support ).
  • Why it starts blank: the estimate waits until the internal temperature rises about 16°F (8°C), and ambient reads as a dash until it is 10°F (5°C) above internal (MEATER Support ).
  • What it can’t predict: the barbecue stall on brisket or pork shoulder, and wrapping. MEATER says the estimator accounts for neither, so set a lower target if you wrap (MEATER Support ).

Getting better estimates

  • Let the meat come up from fridge temperature first. Cold meat takes longer to reach the 16°F rise.
  • Keep the cooker steady. MEATER says steady ambient temperature gives better estimates, and every heat change moves the estimate.
  • Expect the number to jump when you flip the meat. The cooler side has to heat back up at the probe.

All three tips come from MEATER’s estimator guide .

MEATER Pro XL FAQ: what it can do and what it works with

Does MEATER work with Alexa?

Yes on iPhone. Enable the MEATER Skill in the Alexa app and sign in with your MEATER account, then ask things like “Alexa, ask MEATER how my steak is doing.” MEATER says the skill is not currently available on Android. Source: MEATER Support .

Does MEATER work with Home Assistant?

Yes. Home Assistant’s official Meater integration reads internal and ambient temperature, cook state, target and peak temperature, and the expected finish time from MEATER Cloud. The app or block needs an active Bluetooth link to the probe and a MEATER Cloud connection. Source: Home Assistant .

Why is my MEATER cook time estimate blank?

It waits until the internal temperature rises about 16°F (8°C) from the start. Cold or frozen meat makes that take longer. Source: MEATER Support .

Does the MEATER estimate account for the stall?

No. MEATER says the estimator does not account for the stall on large cuts, or for wrapping. Source: MEATER Support .

Does MEATER work with ChatGPT, Claude or MCP?

MEATER does not list ChatGPT, Claude or an MCP server. Through Home Assistant, an agent connected to Home Assistant’s MCP server can read the MEATER sensors you expose. Source: Home Assistant Meater , Home Assistant MCP server docs .

Connecting AI agents safely

If you hook a device or account up to an AI agent, the agent gets the same access you do. I write about doing that safely:
