The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is Google's current flagship thermostat. It learns your schedule, senses when you are home, and now ships with a wireless room sensor so it can heat or cool based on the room you are actually in. A Nest thermostat runs my house's heating and cooling, alongside a Nest doorbell and cameras in the same app.

## What reviewers like

- A room sensor in the box. You can tell it to prioritize the bedroom at night and the office during the day, or average several rooms, per Google.
- The Verge's verdict is worth the wait: a larger, sharper screen and a better-looking design than the 3rd gen.
- It ties into the rest of Google Home, so cameras, doorbells and the thermostat share one app.

## What to watch for

- Setup is Google Home app only. If you do not use Google Home, that is a new app to live in.
- Sensors need to sit within roughly 50 feet of the thermostat and run on CR2 batteries.
- Check your wiring first. Some systems need a common wire or a different thermostat, and Google's compatibility checker is the place to start.

## Who should buy it

Buy it if you use Google Home or plan to, have rooms that run hot or cold, and want a thermostat you set once. Skip it if you are in Apple Home or Alexa first and want built-in voice; ecobee may suit you better. Renters should check with the landlord before swapping a thermostat.

## Why I rate it a 5

My verdict covers the whole Nest setup in my house: the thermostat, the doorbell and many cameras, all 5/5. The thermostat is the part I touch least, which is the point of it.

## Learning, sensing and the savings question

The Learning Thermostat builds a schedule from your adjustments and uses presence sensing to save energy when no one is home. Whether that saves you money depends on your house and your habits; I looked at the evidence in [do AI thermostats save money](/ai-life/home/thermostats/do-ai-thermostats-save-money/). The honest version is that the biggest wins come from setting a sensible schedule and away temperature, which any smart thermostat helps you do.

## Room sensors

Google's help pages describe two ways to use sensors: schedule which room the thermostat follows at each time of day, or average several rooms. You can add up to six. That is the fix for a bedroom upstairs that is always warmer than the hallway where the thermostat sits.

## Before you buy

- Take a photo of your current thermostat wiring before you remove anything.
- Run Google's compatibility check with that photo.
- Count your heating and cooling stages; the 4th gen supports up to three and two.
- Decide where the included sensor goes. Bedrooms are the usual choice.

## Alternatives

- **ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium.** Built-in Alexa and a radar sensor, better for Apple Home and Alexa homes.
- **Nest Thermostat (non-learning).** Simpler and cheaper, without the learning and with a plainer screen.

## Quick answers

**Does it work with Apple Home?** Through Matter, yes, for basic control.

**Do I need a subscription?** No.

## Is the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) on sale for Black Friday?

It is one of the products I am watching this season. I do not list sale prices here because they change by the hour and differ by color, bundle and store. Compare against the price you see in the weeks before the sale, and check whether a bundle adds things you will not use.

## Our take

Mike's rating is 5/5 across his Nest thermostat, doorbell and cameras. For a Google Home house, this is the thermostat to get.
