Yes, modestly. Independent studies land in the single digits for most homes. More on the [thermostat hub](/ai-life/home/thermostats/).

## The numbers

| Source | Savings found |
| --- | --- |
| ENERGY STAR | About 8% on heating and cooling bills, roughly $50 a year |
| NEEA Northwest study (2025) | About 5% |

## What moves the number

- **Your old habits.** If you already set back the temperature at night and when you leave, a smart thermostat has less to fix.
- **Climate and system.** Bigger heating and cooling loads leave more to save.
- **Whether you leave the features on.** Learning schedules and away modes only help if you don't override them.

## Is it worth it?

At roughly $50 a year, a thermostat pays for itself over a few years, sooner if your utility offers a rebate. Check your utility before you buy. {{< aff amazon "See smart thermostats on Amazon" />}}

Renters who can't swap the thermostat can automate a window AC instead with a [SwitchBot hub](/ai-life/home/smart-home-hubs/switchbot-hub-automations-renters/). ## What my agent can do with it

A thermostat is a good agent device because the stakes are low and the data is useful. An agent could check the forecast and your calendar, pre-heat before you get home from a trip, and send a monthly note on runtime. Keep it to setpoints, not system settings.
