Philips Hue is the smart lighting system most people end up with after trying cheaper bulbs. It runs on its own Zigbee network through a Hue Bridge, so the lights keep working even when your Wi-Fi is having a bad day. Hue is now adding AI features on top, but the reason I rate it a 5 is that the basics never break.

## What reviewers like

- Reliability. Hue's own Zigbee mesh keeps lights responsive without leaning on Wi-Fi.
- It works with everything: Apple, Google, Amazon and Matter, through the bridge.
- The Bridge Pro adds sensing without new hardware. MotionAware turns existing bulbs into motion detection, per The Verge.

## What to watch for

- MotionAware needs the right layout and can be slow or miss motion. Dedicated sensors are still better for most rooms, per reviewers.
- Custom AI Behaviors are early. TechRadar saw execution errors, and Hueblog notes you cannot edit the result by hand.
- Hue costs more per bulb than most rivals. Watch for starter kit bundles.

## Who should buy it

Buy Hue if you want lights that work every single time and you plan to grow past a handful of bulbs. Start with a starter kit that includes a bridge. Skip it if you only want one or two lamps on a schedule; a cheap Wi-Fi plug will do that.

## How I use it

Hue runs across my house. The setup that made it click is a Hue dial switch with time-of-day scenes: one press gives bright light in the morning, warm light in the evening and a dim night light late, without anyone thinking about it. I wrote that setup up step by step in [Hue time-of-day scenes](/ai-life/home/smart-home-hubs/philips-hue-time-of-day-scenes/). That is why my rating says dead simple.

## Bridge or Bridge Pro

The original Hue Bridge handles a typical house. The Bridge Pro is for large setups and for the newer features: MotionAware, SpatialAware scenes that use where each light sits in the room, and the Pro-only AI automations. The Verge's verdict was better light, and Reddit owners say MotionAware alone is a mixed reason to upgrade. If your current bridge is running out of room, the Pro is the move. If not, it can wait.

## The AI part

Custom AI Behaviors let you describe an automation in plain words, like a wake-up routine, and the Hue app builds it. Hueblog covered the launch in late October 2026, and TechRadar found early teething troubles. I would treat it as a shortcut for building routines, then check what it made.

## Black Friday tip

Hue goes on sale every year, and starter kits are usually the best value per bulb. Match the color temperature and fixture type before you buy a multi-pack.

## Quick answers

**Do I need the Bridge?** Hue bulbs work over Bluetooth without it, but the Bridge Pro is what makes Hue reliable across a house, adds away-from-home control and runs automations.

**Does Hue work with Matter?** Yes, through the Bridge, which exposes Hue lights to Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa.

**Where should I start?** A Bridge, a few bulbs in the rooms you use most, and a dimmer switch.

## Is the Philips Hue on sale for Black Friday?

It is one of the products I am watching this season. I do not list sale prices here because they change by the hour and differ by color, bundle and store. Compare against the price you see in the weeks before the sale, and check whether a bundle adds things you will not use.

## Our take

Mike's rating is 5/5: dead simple, and the system he relies on daily. Add the AI features later, once they settle.
