A subscription doubles what a camera costs over a few years. Some cameras give you person detection and recording with no monthly fee by keeping video local. More on the [security camera hub](/ai-life/home/security-cameras/).

## Picks

| Camera | How it avoids a fee | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Eufy SoloCam S340 | 8GB built-in storage, on-device AI | [Smart Home Matrix](https://smarthomematrix.com/) |
| Reolink Argus 4 Pro | microSD up to 512GB, on-device person and vehicle detection | [Smart Home Matrix](https://smarthomematrix.com/) |

Wired's [subscription-free camera roundup](https://www.wired.com/story/best-subscription-free-security-cameras/) covers more options and is worth reading before you buy.

**Eufy SoloCam S340.** Dual lenses and built-in storage, so there's no card to buy and no cloud plan needed for history. {{< aff eufy "See the SoloCam S340 at Eufy" />}}

**Reolink Argus 4 Pro.** Bigger local storage through microSD. Detection runs on the camera. {{< aff amazon "See the Argus 4 Pro on Amazon" />}}

## What you give up

- **Off-site backup.** If someone takes the camera, they take the footage. A home base indoors helps.
- **Some smart features.** Cloud plans often add things like longer history or extra alert types.

## Compared with subscription brands

Wyze Cam Plus is $2.99/mo per camera ([Wyze](https://www.wyze.com/pages/service-plans)) and Ring plans start at $4.99/mo ([Ring](https://ring.com/plans)). See [Eufy vs Wyze vs Ring](/ai-life/home/security-cameras/eufy-vs-wyze-vs-ring-ai-detection/) for the full comparison, and [local AI cameras](/ai-life/home/security-cameras/local-ai-cameras-no-cloud/) if privacy is the main reason you're skipping the cloud.
