Dock upgrades are where robot vacuum prices climb fastest. A basic charger, a self-emptying base, and a full station that washes and dries mop pads are three very different purchases. Here's how to decide, using published tests. More guides are on the [robot vacuum hub](/ai-life/home/robot-vacuums/).

## Self-empty only

A self-emptying base removes one chore: emptying the robot's small bin. For carpet-heavy homes that rarely mop, that may be all you need ([PIQSY](https://www.piqsy.com.au/guides/robot-vacuum-dock-worth-it)). It's also the cheaper path.

## Full wash-and-dry stations

These refill the robot's water, wash and dry the pads, and sometimes dose detergent. They make the most sense in hard floor homes that mop often, especially kitchens and homes with kids and pets ([RoboVacGuide](https://robovacguide.com/robot-vacuum-hot-water-mopping/)).

## The hot water claims

Two things to know:

1. **The heat is for the pads, not your floor.** The temperature on the box describes how the dock washes the mop pads. The water that touches your floor comes from the robot's onboard tank ([RoboVacGuide](https://robovacguide.com/robot-vacuum-hot-water-mopping/)).
2. **The claimed temperatures and measured ones don't match.** Vacuum Wars measured wash water across brands. The Roborock Saros Z70 measured highest at 114.1°F. The Dreame Aqua10, which claims 212°F, measured 111.1°F. The Ecovacs X11, with the lowest claim at 167°F, measured 113.1°F ([Vacuum Wars](https://vacuumwars.com/robot-vacuum-mop-dock-temperature-test/)).

Drying matters as much as washing. A damp pad sitting in a closed dock is where smells start, so look at the hot air drying spec too ([RoboVacGuide](https://robovacguide.com/robot-vacuum-hot-water-mopping/)).

## What a dock still leaves you

No dock is maintenance free. You still refill clean water, empty dirty water, clean the wash tray, replace bags and swap pads ([PIQSY](https://www.piqsy.com.au/guides/robot-vacuum-dock-worth-it)). The work moves from daily to every week or two.

## Decision rule

- Mostly carpet, mop rarely: self-empty base.
- Hard floors, cook daily, kids or pets: full station with hot wash and hot air drying.
- Don't pay extra just for a bigger temperature number.
