Netgear Orbi 770 Review: Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 Mesh for Busy Homes

Netgear Orbi 770 review, research-based: tri-band Wi-Fi 7 with MLO, 2.5 Gbps ports, stable family-friendly coverage, limited settings and paid extras.

AI Life / Home / Networking

The Orbi 770 is Netgear’s lower-priced Wi-Fi 7 mesh. It is tri-band, with 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz all available to your devices, and it uses Wi-Fi 7’s Multi-Link Operation instead of a dedicated backhaul radio.

I have not owned the Netgear Orbi 770. This review is built from the maker’s published specs and independent reviews, linked below. For more picks, see the Networking hub .

What reviewers like

  • WIRED said it never went down in a month of testing and handled four movie streams plus gaming at once.
  • All ports are multi-gig, and wired backhaul is supported.
  • Tom’s Hardware measured it ahead of the Deco BE63 at 25 feet on 6 GHz.

What to watch for

  • No dedicated backhaul radio. KitGuru found older mesh systems with a dedicated radio faster at distance.
  • Limited Wi-Fi settings; the bands are merged into one network and cannot be split, per Dong Knows Tech.
  • No USB port, and Netgear sells add-on security and parental control subscriptions.

Who should buy it

Buy it if you want a hands-off, stable Wi-Fi 7 mesh for a busy family home with newer devices. Skip it if you need to tweak settings, have many old 2.4 GHz gadgets that dislike merged networks, or want the most features per dollar.

What MLO does and does not do

Multi-Link Operation lets Wi-Fi 7 devices use more than one band at once. Expert Reviews saw no measurable speed gain from it on the 770, but argued it should make links more robust. Read MLO as a reliability feature, not a speed multiplier.

Two units or three

KitGuru recommends the three-pack for real coverage gains over a single good router. If you are buying two, place the satellite where it still sees the router through one wall, or run a cable.

Mesh basics before you buy

  • Count your rooms, not your square feet. Walls, floors and appliances matter more than the box’s coverage claim. Put the first satellite about halfway between the router and the dead zone, not in the dead zone itself.
  • Wire the backhaul if you can. Every reviewer who tested wired and wireless backhaul saw faster, steadier results with a cable between nodes.
  • Match the ports to your plan. If your internet is faster than 1 Gbps, gigabit ports become the ceiling.
  • Check your ISP box. Most mesh systems have no modem inside, so your provider’s gateway may need bridge mode to avoid double NAT.
  • Read the subscription page. Several brands keep parental controls or security filtering behind a paid plan. Decide whether you need them before you compare prices.

Privacy, accounts and subscriptions

Every mesh system here needs a phone app and a cloud account to set up. That account sees your device list and, on some plans, traffic categories for filtering. Read the privacy settings once, turn off data sharing you do not want, and note which features sit behind a paid plan. Firmware updates install automatically on most of these systems, which is good for security; check that auto-update is on after setup.

Quick answers

Is Wi-Fi 7 worth it yet? If your phone and laptop support it and you are replacing an old router anyway, yes. If your devices are a few years old, a good Wi-Fi 6 or 6E system gives you most of the benefit today.

Is the Netgear Orbi 770 on sale for Black Friday?

It is one of the products I am watching this season. I do not list sale prices here because they change by the hour and differ by color, bundle and store. Compare against the price you see in the weeks before the sale, and check whether a bundle adds things you will not use.

Our take

AI Score note: research-based, not hands-on. One of the steadiest Wi-Fi 7 mesh systems in published testing, trading settings control and a dedicated backhaul for simplicity. This is my editorial read of published reviews, not a rating.
