Google Nest Wifi Pro Review: A Former Nest WiFi Owner Looks at the 6E Upgrade

Nest Wifi Pro review from a former Nest WiFi owner (3/5): tri-band Wi-Fi 6E, Thread and Matter, gigabit ports only, and who should pick something else.

AI Life / Home / Networking

The Nest Wifi Pro is Google’s tri-band Wi-Fi 6E mesh system, managed in the Google Home app. I owned a Nest Wifi Pro before I moved my house to UniFi, and the rating above is mine. The specs and test results here come from Google and independent reviews.

What reviewers like

  • The Verge saw faster speeds and better reliability than the older Nest Wifi, and a software update fixed slow far rooms during testing.
  • Setup and day to day management live in Google Home, which suits people who never want to see a router settings page.
  • A built-in Thread border router helps if you are adding Matter devices.

What to watch for

  • All Ethernet ports are 1 Gbps, so WIRED says skip it if your internet plan is faster than that.
  • No band splitting, no VPN support and few advanced settings, per WIRED.
  • Trusted Reviews measured throughput behind most rivals, and it will not mesh with your old Nest Wifi points.

Who should buy it

Buy it if you live in Google Home, your internet plan is 1 Gbps or less, and you want a mesh you set up once. Skip it if you want multi-gig ports, fine-grained controls, or the fastest numbers; look at eero 7, Deco or UniFi instead.

Why I moved on from Nest Wifi Pro

My verdict is short: 3/5, and I switched. My house now runs on UniFi, which I cover in my UniFi home network owner review .

The 6 GHz band, in plain terms

The Pro adds a 6 GHz band. WIRED notes it mostly works as the link between mesh points, which frees the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands for your devices. The catch is range: 6 GHz does not go through walls well, so place points with a clear line or a single wall between them.

Mesh basics before you buy

  • Count your rooms, not your square feet. Walls, floors and appliances matter more than the box’s coverage claim. Put the first satellite about halfway between the router and the dead zone, not in the dead zone itself.
  • Wire the backhaul if you can. Every reviewer who tested wired and wireless backhaul saw faster, steadier results with a cable between nodes.
  • Match the ports to your plan. If your internet is faster than 1 Gbps, gigabit ports become the ceiling.
  • Check your ISP box. Most mesh systems have no modem inside, so your provider’s gateway may need bridge mode to avoid double NAT.
  • Read the subscription page. Several brands keep parental controls or security filtering behind a paid plan. Decide whether you need them before you compare prices.

Privacy, accounts and subscriptions

Every mesh system here needs a phone app and a cloud account to set up. That account sees your device list and, on some plans, traffic categories for filtering. Read the privacy settings once, turn off data sharing you do not want, and note which features sit behind a paid plan. Firmware updates install automatically on most of these systems, which is good for security; check that auto-update is on after setup.

Quick answers

Is Wi-Fi 7 worth it yet? If your phone and laptop support it and you are replacing an old router anyway, yes. If your devices are a few years old, a good Wi-Fi 6 or 6E system gives you most of the benefit today.

Is the Google Nest Wifi Pro on sale for Black Friday?

It is one of the products I am watching this season. I do not list sale prices here because they change by the hour and differ by color, bundle and store. Compare against the price you see in the weeks before the sale, and check whether a bundle adds things you will not use.

Our take

Simple, reliable and Google Home native, held back by gigabit ports and thin settings. My own Nest Wifi Pro earned a 3/5 from me, which is why I eventually switched to UniFi.
