AI Life / Home / Networking
The eero 7 is Amazon’s entry Wi-Fi 7 mesh router. It is dual-band, so it skips the 6 GHz band that pricier Wi-Fi 7 systems use, and it doubles as a smart home hub for Matter, Thread and Zigbee devices.
I have not owned the eero 7. This review is built from the maker’s published specs and independent reviews, linked below. For more picks, see the Networking hub .

What reviewers like
- Very easy setup in the eero app, per PCMag and Tom’s Hardware.
- Two 2.5 GbE ports on every unit, rare at this level.
- Built-in Zigbee, Thread and Matter mean one less hub for many smart homes.
What to watch for
- No 6 GHz band. Trusted Reviews found it only just ahead of older Wi-Fi 6 gear in a congested area.
- Parental controls and security tools need an eero Plus subscription, per Tom’s Hardware.
- Setup and settings are app-only.
Who should buy it
Buy it if you want a cheap, easy step into Wi-Fi 7, live somewhere without many neighboring networks, and like Alexa or a built-in Zigbee hub. Skip it in a crowded apartment building or if you want the fastest close-range speeds; a tri-band system such as the Orbi 770 or Deco BE63 fits better.
Dual-band Wi-Fi 7, explained
Wi-Fi 7 brings Multi-Link Operation, wider channels and better efficiency. The eero 7 gets those on 2.4 and 5 GHz only. In Tom’s Hardware’s testing it matched the Deco and Orbi up close on 5 GHz and stayed ahead of the Deco under congestion, but fell behind both at 25 feet. That pattern is the honest trade: you get most of what most homes need, at a lower price, without the top end.
The smart home angle
eero 7 works as a Zigbee hub and a Thread border router and is Matter compliant. If you already use Alexa, that can replace a separate hub for sensors and plugs. Check that your specific devices are on eero’s supported list before you retire an existing hub.
Mesh basics before you buy
- Count your rooms, not your square feet. Walls, floors and appliances matter more than the box’s coverage claim. Put the first satellite about halfway between the router and the dead zone, not in the dead zone itself.
- Wire the backhaul if you can. Every reviewer who tested wired and wireless backhaul saw faster, steadier results with a cable between nodes.
- Match the ports to your plan. If your internet is faster than 1 Gbps, gigabit ports become the ceiling.
- Check your ISP box. Most mesh systems have no modem inside, so your provider’s gateway may need bridge mode to avoid double NAT.
- Read the subscription page. Several brands keep parental controls or security filtering behind a paid plan. Decide whether you need them before you compare prices.
Privacy, accounts and subscriptions
Every mesh system here needs a phone app and a cloud account to set up. That account sees your device list and, on some plans, traffic categories for filtering. Read the privacy settings once, turn off data sharing you do not want, and note which features sit behind a paid plan. Firmware updates install automatically on most of these systems, which is good for security; check that auto-update is on after setup.
Quick answers
Is Wi-Fi 7 worth it yet? If your phone and laptop support it and you are replacing an old router anyway, yes. If your devices are a few years old, a good Wi-Fi 6 or 6E system gives you most of the benefit today.
Is the eero 7 on sale for Black Friday?
It is one of the products I am watching this season. I do not list sale prices here because they change by the hour and differ by color, bundle and store. Compare against the price you see in the weeks before the sale, and check whether a bundle adds things you will not use.
Our take
AI Score note: research-based, not hands-on. Easy, compact and smart-home friendly, with real Wi-Fi 7 features, but the missing 6 GHz band and paid extras cap it. This is my editorial read of published reviews, not a rating.
