Birdfy makes camera bird feeders that record visits and use AI to name the species. I own one. The rating and the two complaints above are mine; the lineup details and test results below come from Birdfy and independent reviews.

## What reviewers like

- MacRumors found the AI right much more often than wrong, and sometimes able to tell male from female.
- HGTV praised battery life with the solar panel, even in the Pacific Northwest.
- Live view and saved clips make it easy to share visits.

## What to watch for

- Too many alerts. MacRumors got 50+ notifications a day, and motion recording picks up people and other movement.
- Battery life varies a lot. WIRED's Rookie test unit lasted under two weeks against a seven-week claim.
- Misidentifications happen, especially with drab or uncommon birds, per HGTV and MacRumors.

## Who should buy it

Buy it if you want to see and name the birds in your yard and do not mind tuning alerts and topping up the battery. Skip it if you want a set-and-forget gadget, or if your feeder spot gets little sun.

## What I mean by noisy

Not sound. I mean notifications: too many alerts, and some are false positives with no bird in them. Reviewers see the same thing. MacRumors stopped reading most alerts after getting more than 50 a day, and HGTV had to lower sensitivity because branches in the wind kept triggering clips.

## Taming the alerts

Birdfy's own help pages list the fixes:

- Turn on AI bird recognition and set notification frequency to **Birds & Squirrels** so you only hear about animals.
- Add "squirrel" to Do Not Disturb if you only want birds.
- Lower motion sensitivity. HGTV found medium the best balance.
- Move it out of direct sun, reflections and strong wind or vents, which Birdfy says cause false triggers.

## The battery

The battery is the other half of my verdict. Results swing with traffic and sun. HGTV got about six weeks per charge with solar in a shady corner; WIRED's Rookie lasted under two weeks. Birdfy notes solar may still need help in long cloudy stretches. Put the panel where it gets direct midday sun, and plan on a USB top-up when you clean the feeder. Cold weather also drains lithium batteries faster, so expect shorter runs in winter, which is exactly when feeder traffic is often highest. Turning down clip length and alert volume helps here too, since every false trigger costs battery.

## Picking a model

Birdfy sells several feeders. The Feeder 2 is the base model; Pro adds a sharper tracking camera and solar; Duo adds a second camera and a bigger panel. Check whether AI ID is lifetime or subscription on the exact listing before you buy. Before buying, also check the opening on the hopper and the size of the perch for the birds you get, and whether the camera mount fits your pole or wall. ## Is the Birdfy smart bird feeder on sale for Black Friday?

It is one of the products I am watching this season. I do not list sale prices here because they change by the hour and differ by color, bundle and store. Compare against the price you see in the weeks before the sale, and check whether a bundle adds things you will not use.

## Our take

It's cool. The battery and the alert volume are why it is a 4, not a 5.
