The Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) is Google's 2025 doorbell. It records 2K HDR video with a tall 166 degree view, and with the right subscription, Gemini writes descriptive alerts, lets you search your footage in plain words and sends a daily summary. A Nest doorbell is on my front door, part of a Nest setup with cameras and a thermostat.

The rating above is mine. The specs and test results below come from the maker and independent reviews, linked under the table. More picks are on the [Doorbells hub](/ai-life/home/doorbells/).

## What reviewers like

- Video. Reviewers praise the 2K HDR picture and night vision.
- Gemini alerts. PCWorld calls Gemini a game-changer: alerts that say what happened, not just that motion happened.
- It lives in Google Home with Nest cameras and thermostats.

## What to watch for

- The best AI features need the top Google Home Premium tier, and that is an ongoing cost.
- Wired only. You need doorbell wiring at 16 to 24 VAC; no battery option.
- Tom's Guide and The Verge saw inconsistent summaries at times.

## Who should buy it

Buy it if you have doorbell wiring and a Google Home setup, and you are willing to pay for the AI tier or are happy with basic alerts. Skip it if you have no doorbell wiring, or if you want local storage and no subscription; the Eufy E340 is built for that.

## Why I rate it a 5

My Nest doorbell, cameras and thermostat all live in one app, and I rate the whole setup 5/5. That one-app part is underrated: when someone rings, the same app that shows the door also shows the driveway cameras.

## What Gemini adds

With Google Home Premium Advanced, Gemini watches the clips and writes descriptive alerts, like a delivery person leaving a box rather than generic motion. You can search history by describing what you want to find, and you get a daily summary of what happened. The Verge's hands-on describes it as AI that watches everything, which is both the appeal and the thing to think about. Standard adds 30 days of event history without those AI features.

## Wiring check

The 3rd gen needs a wired doorbell circuit at 16 to 24 VAC. Look at your chime transformer or ask an electrician if you are not sure. If you have no wiring, Google's battery doorbell or a battery model from another brand is the route.

## Privacy

Video and AI processing run through Google's cloud. Review who in the house has access in Google Home, and set activity zones so the doorbell is not watching the sidewalk or a neighbor's door.

## Alternatives

- **Eufy Video Doorbell E340.** Dual cameras, local storage, no subscription.
- **Ring Battery Doorbell Pro.** Battery-powered 4K, subscription for recordings.

## Quick answers

**Do I need a subscription?** No, but without one you get live view and alerts with limited history. Google Home Premium Standard adds 30-day event history. Advanced adds the Gemini features.

**Does it work with Alexa?** Google's doorbells are built for Google Home. Alexa support is limited, so Alexa homes should look at Ring.

**Can it run on battery?** Not this model. Google sells a separate battery doorbell.

## Is the Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) on sale for Black Friday?

It is one of the products I am watching this season. I do not list sale prices here because they change by the hour and differ by color, bundle and store. Compare against the price you see in the weeks before the sale, and check whether a bundle adds things you will not use.

## Our take

Mike's rating is 5/5 across his Nest doorbell, cameras and thermostat. For a wired door in a Google Home house, this is the pick; the subscription is the decision.
