Read the full review first if you are still deciding: Ring Battery Doorbell Pro Review .
Getting started
- Install the doorbell, add it in the Ring app, and set motion zones so the street doesn’t trigger it all day.
- Decide on a subscription. Ring’s AI features, including Video Search, need a compatible Ring Home plan (Ring Video Search ).
- Decide on end-to-end encryption. It is the most private setting, but Video Search does not work with it on (Ring Video Search ).
- If you have an Echo Show and Alexa+, link the Ring skill in the Alexa app to use Ring’s AI features there (Amazon: Ring AI with Alexa+ ).
How the AI works
- Video Search: you type a plain-language search, up to 200 characters, like “white truck in the driveway,” and Ring’s AI finds matching clips. It searches motion events only (Ring Video Search ).
- Where it runs: in Ring’s cloud, on your recorded video. That is why it needs a subscription and why end-to-end encryption has to be off (Ring Video Search ).
- Where it doesn’t work: Ring says Video Search is not available in Illinois, and not on Ring Edge, Alarm Pro or Car Cam (Ring Video Search ).
- Alexa+: with Ring AI Pro and the Ring skill, Alexa+ can give descriptive announcements of who is at the door and run Video Search by voice on Echo Show and Fire TV (Amazon: Ring AI with Alexa+ ).
- Search Party: Ring also uses AI to help find lost dogs from neighbors’ outdoor cameras when owners opt in (Ring blog ).
Privacy choices that matter
The big trade-off is simple: end-to-end encryption or AI search, not both. If your doorbell faces something sensitive, pick encryption and give up search.

Can Claude or ChatGPT control it through Home Assistant?
If the device is in Home Assistant, yes, indirectly. Home Assistant’s Model Context Protocol integration makes Home Assistant an MCP server that Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code and other MCP clients can connect to over OAuth. With the Device control tool set, the agent only sees entities you have exposed to Assist. Cloud agents need your Home Assistant reachable from the internet. Source: Home Assistant MCP server docs .
Connecting AI agents safely
If you hook a device or account up to an AI agent, the agent gets the same access you do. I write about doing that safely:
