Getting started
- Plug in the speaker and add it in the Sonos app.
- Run Trueplay tuning once for each room. The owner review explains why.
- Pick a voice assistant in the app: Sonos Voice Control, Alexa, or none. Voice is off until you turn it on (Sonos privacy statement ).
How the AI works
- Sonos Voice Control (“Hey Sonos”) runs on the speaker. Sonos says commands are processed locally and “no audio, transcript, or voice data is transmitted to Sonos servers or any third party” (Sonos addendum ).
- Which model: Sonos’s own small speech models, trained on scripted audio and run on the speaker (Sonos Tech Blog ).
- The tradeoff: it handles a fixed set of music and speaker commands, not open questions.
- Alexa on Sonos: after the Alexa wake word, the recording goes to Amazon. Sonos says it keeps no copy (Sonos privacy statement ).
This is the most private voice setup in this guide set. If privacy matters more than chat, use Hey Sonos.
Sonos FAQ: what it can do and what it works with
Does Sonos Voice Control send audio to the cloud?
No. Sonos says Sonos Voice Control processes commands entirely on the speaker and sends no audio or transcript to Sonos or anyone else. Source: Sonos addendum .
Does Sonos work with Alexa?
Yes. Alexa is a third-party voice option on mic-equipped Sonos speakers; with it, recordings go to Amazon after the wake word. Source: Sonos privacy statement .
Does Sonos work with Home Assistant?
Yes for playback control. Home Assistant’s official Sonos integration controls speakers once UPnP is on in the Sonos app. It does not turn Sonos mics into a Home Assistant voice assistant. Source: Home Assistant .
Can Sonos Voice Control answer general questions?

Can Sonos Voice Control control Hue lights?
