Mike’s take: I own a HomePod and rate it 4/5. In my words: “Nice sound but limited.” More in my owner review .

Getting started

  1. Plug in the HomePod and hold an unlocked iPhone or iPad next to it. Setup runs in the Home app.
  2. Assign it to a room in the Home app. Room names are how Siri knows which lights and speakers you mean.
  3. Open Home Settings in the Home app and review Siri, Location Services and listening history before you get comfortable. Apple’s guide lists each switch (Apple Support ).
  4. If you want HomePod as a home hub for HomeKit and Matter accessories, keep it powered and on your home Wi-Fi.

How the AI works

  • Where it runs: Apple says nothing you say is sent to Apple servers until you activate Siri, and a multicolored light on top shows when Siri is listening, thinking or responding (Apple Support ).
  • What leaves the device: after the wake word, your request goes to Apple. Apple says that traffic is encrypted and uses anonymous IDs instead of your identity (Apple Support ).
  • Which model: classic Siri. The newer Siri AI is not on every HomePod. MacRumors reports Apple confirmed the original HomePod and original HomePod mini get no Siri AI support, HomePod mini 2 gets it in a future update, and HomePod 2 is unconfirmed (MacRumors ).
  • When Siri AI does arrive on a model: MacRumors reports the home owner needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone or iPad on current software, Siri AI turned on, and a supported language. At launch it is English only in a short list of countries and not in the EU (MacRumors ).

That is the honest reason I call it limited. It sounds great, but the assistant inside is the old one unless you own a model on Apple’s list.

Tips that help

  • Lock the touch controls if people keep bumping the top. The setting is in the HomePod’s Home app settings (Apple Support ).
  • Turn off Update Listening History if guests play music that skews your Apple Music picks (Apple Support ).

Connecting AI agents safely

If you hook a device or account up to an AI agent, the agent gets the same access you do. I write about doing that safely:
