The right smart speaker depends on which assistant you want and how much you care about sound. I own all four of these brands, and my ratings are in the boxes below. The comparison itself draws on the brands' spec pages.

| Pick | Best for | Assistant |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Sonos Era 100 or Era 300 | Sound, multi-room | Sonos Voice Control, Alexa |
| Apple HomePod or HomePod mini | iPhone homes | Siri |
| Amazon Echo | Lowest-cost smart home control | Alexa+ |
| Google Nest Audio or Nest Mini | Google and Nest homes | Google Assistant, Gemini |

{{< owner sonos >}}"Has it all, sound everywhere."{{< /owner >}}

{{< owner homepod >}}"Nice sound but limited."{{< /owner >}}

{{< owner echo >}}"Not very useful." Alexa feels creepy.{{< /owner >}}

{{< owner nest >}}My Nest thermostat, doorbell and cameras all live in the same app. 5/5.{{< /owner >}}

## What matters

- **Assistant:** pick the one that already runs your phone or your home. Switching later is a pain.
- **Matter and Thread:** newer Echo, Nest and HomePod models can act as Matter controllers or Thread border routers, so they can run smart locks and sensors.
- **Sound:** Sonos and HomePod are built for music first.
