Apple HomePod Owner Review: Nice Sound, Limited Siri

Owner review of Apple HomePod and the new HomePod mini 2: 4/5. Nice sound and fast, private smart home control, but Siri is still limited and Siri AI has not arrived.

AI Life / Assistants / Smart Speakers

Apple sells two HomePods: the full-size second-generation HomePod and the HomePod mini, which Apple just replaced with the HomePod mini 2. Both are built for iPhone households. They sound good, they act as an Apple Home hub, and they run Siri. I use HomePods, and my verdict has not changed in years: they sound nice, and they are limited.

What reviewers like

  • Speed. The Verge found Siri on the mini 2 regularly answering in under three seconds, against up to 10 on the first mini, and it stops narrating every smart home action.
  • Sound. Cult of Mac heard noticeably stronger bass on the mini 2 side by side with the original. The full-size HomePod still sounds much fuller, per Macworld.
  • Privacy. Apple’s pitch is the strongest privacy of any assistant, and it does not run an ad business on your requests.

What to watch for

  • Siri is still Siri. Siri AI is not on the mini 2 yet, and Apple only says it is coming later. Harder questions still punt to your iPhone, per The Verge.
  • It is for Apple households. Setup needs an iPhone or iPad, and AirPlay is the main way to play from other apps.
  • The Verge could not get the new Mac default speaker feature working in its first look.

Who should buy it

Buy a HomePod if your house runs on iPhones and you want good sound and a fast Apple Home hub. Get the mini 2 for most rooms and the full-size HomePod where music matters. Skip both if anyone in the house uses Android, or if you want an assistant that answers real questions today.

Why I rate it a 4

My verdict is four words: “nice sound but limited.” The sound is the part that earns the 4. The limit is Siri, which reviewers still find weaker than the other big assistants for anything beyond timers, weather and home control. Apple’s privacy stance is the other reason Apple households pick it.

HomePod mini 2 or full-size HomePod

  • mini 2. The new S10 chip makes Siri and smart home commands much faster, and the Wi-Fi 6E radio helps. The speaker hardware looks unchanged on paper, so the better sound comes from processing, per MacRumors.
  • HomePod (2nd gen). Five tweeters, a big woofer, room sensing and Dolby Atmos. Better for a living room or a TV setup with Apple TV 4K.
  • A stereo pair of minis is a reasonable middle option if you want width without the size.

The smart home side

Any HomePod works as an Apple Home hub, so your locks, cameras and lights can run automations when your phone is not home. The mini 2 adds Thread and Ultra Wideband. Sound Recognition listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and notifies your phone, which is a quiet but useful feature for a house that is empty during the day.

When Siri AI shows up

Apple says the mini 2 will get Siri AI, its Apple Intelligence based assistant, in a future software update. Until it ships, buy a HomePod for what it does today. If the AI arrives and works, that is a bonus.

Is the Apple HomePod on sale for Black Friday?

It is one of the products I am watching this season. I do not list sale prices here because they change by the hour and differ by color, bundle and store. Compare against the price you see in the weeks before the sale, and check whether a bundle adds things you will not use.

Our take

Mike’s rating is 4/5: nice sound and dependable home control, limited by Siri. The mini 2 is the one to buy for most rooms, as long as you live in Apple’s ecosystem.
